SOPHISTICATED, ADAPTABLE CARE REQUIRES SPACIOUS, MODERN FACILITIES
- Our objective is to create a facility that meets the growing and complex needs of our tiniest patients and their families.
- The current estimated cost for the redevelopment project at KHSC’s KGH site is over $500 million.
- As the regional centre for high-risk obstetrics, the KGH site has an important role to play in delivering the very best obstetric care to mothers and babies who have serious health concerns.
- The current space does not provide the amount of space, privacy, and in-room amenities to support the modern needs of babies, mothers and families.
New labour and delivery suites will be modern and comfortable. They will include space for support partners and family to comfortably stand, sit, and recline or sleep. These rooms will also support patients with more birthing method choices, including new tubs for water therapy and water birth.
The new Labour and Delivery space will include two new, large operating suites that feature state-of-the-art equipment. We will also have a new, well-equipped, infant resuscitation room that is located between each of the new ORs. The resuscitation room will have a direct link back to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which will minimize transportation time for sick babies.
A new Post-Partum Care Unit will include large rooms for every baby and family. Most of the suites will be private, allowing families to easily stay together and welcome other friends and family that visit.
By moving Pediatrics beside our new NICU, Labour & Delivery Unit, and Post-Partum Unit, we will centralize the care and expertise of all maternal, infant and pediatric providers. This, in turn, will help provide a seamless and integrated care experience.
“As the region’s high-risk obstetrics and neonatal program, we need to be positioned to offer our patients the most advanced and supportive care environment for labour and delivery and newborn care. A new unit with state-of-the-art technology will allow for innovation, more space per patient, better privacy for families and adjacency to related services we are most reliant on. It will move us closer to the care experience these patients expect and deserve.”- Dr. Graeme Smith, Department Head, Obstetrics and Gynecology, KHSC
