Corrie Barrett had just returned home from her husband’s hospital appointment when she learned that she had won $18,975 in the July jackpot for the UHKF 50/50 lottery with ticket number B-4856550!
“I was just so surprised,” says Corrie. “It’s the first time I’ve entered a 50/50 draw. It happened because a friend of mine has a daughter who won a considerable bit of money, also in a 50/50 lottery for the hospital she was supporting. I thought it sounded like a good idea but I’m not usually that lucky. We’re still getting used to it but thank you to UHKF!”
Administered by UHKF and licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, UHKF 50/50 lottery is a monthly online raffle where individuals purchase tickets for the opportunity to win 50 per cent of the total money raised through the sale of 50/50 tickets.
“The other reason I entered is because I thought it would also be a great way to support our local hospitals here in Kingston. It’s a win-win!” says Corrie. “My husband and I have both been through cancer treatment and we feel very lucky with the hospitals that we have. That’s why the 50/50 lottery is an excellent idea and the more people that know about it the better.”
Since the launch of the UHKF 50/50 initiative, close to $50,000 has been raised in support of local health care right here in Kingston! Funds raised from the lottery will support Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and Providence Care, contributing towards much-needed equipment, programs, education, healthcare facilities, and research that benefit the 500,000 people living in Kingston, southeastern Ontario, and beyond.
Still taking in the news, Corrie has yet to decide how to spend the winnings. “I’m still dazed and shocked but it’s wonderful,” says Corrie. “I’m looking at cars. Ours is 15 years old and might need replacing soon but I’m going to take my time and think about it.”
