Through the support of various District A-3 and A-4 Lions Clubs in southeastern Ontario and region, Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC)’s Ophthalmology Department will benefit from a new, innovative piece of equipment that will be used in the treatment of cataracts.

The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) is grateful for the longstanding support of the Lions Clubs, and for their gift of $31,460 towards the purchase of the optical device, which will be used at KHSC’s Hotel Dieu Hospital site.

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and most successful procedures in all of medicine. This new piece of equipment provides extremely accurate measurements of the eye so that surgeons can select the most appropriate optic lens implant. As a result, patients in our region will enjoy optimal visual restoration after their cataracts are removed. The device uses advanced imaging technology and is easy to operate.

“Our Lions Clubs are pleased that we were able to support the purchase of this piece of equipment as it will help many patients with cataract issues from our community.  Lions of our Districts A-3 and A-4 saw a need and addressed it.  Through co-operation of the two Lions Districts, an amazing achievement came about.  Vision is an important worldwide Lions service but it is also important in our local community,” says Lion Bruce Johnson, Amherstview Lions Club Treasurer and Project Chair.

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. They work on projects to improve communities and protect the environment. The local Lions Clubs are longtime supporters of KHSC and Providence Care and have donated to numerous projects at all sites.
