The Story of Hayden

Sometimes from the most difficult of circumstances comes inspiration. Jody’s story of her son, Hayden, and her decision to donate to our hospitals is such a story.

“My son Hayden was born two months early at KGH. When he was born, the doctor described him as feisty because he was wildly waving his arms and kicking his legs. Although he was in the neonatal intensive care unit, he didn't require oxygen, his blood pressure was fine and everything seemed perfect. Several days later, Hayden came down with a serious intestinal infection. He had necrotizing enterocolitis and needed immediate surgery. He made it through the surgery, but things quickly got worse. The doctors and nurses tried everything to help Hayden, but he was in a downward spiral. It wasn't easy hearing about how sick Hayden was, but we could see for ourselves how much he was suffering. After a few agonizing days, we made the difficult decision to let Hayden go. We called our family together, had him baptized and let everyone say their goodbyes. As Hayden drifted off, my husband Ben and I held him for the last time. He is our precious baby boy and we are so proud of him, how hard he fought and for holding on until we were ready to let him go. He will always be our little man and we love him with our whole hearts. We wanted to thank the doctors and nurses at KGH for their compassion and care, so we decided to make a donation to the Foundation. We hope our gift will help other families and that our story will inspire others to support our hospitals as well.”
