The story of Sheri & Jay Colbert

Sheri & Jay Colbert of Ottawa didn’t plan to have their daughter Avery at KGH, but they are grateful they did. That’s why they’re donors.

My husband and I are from Ottawa, but when we found out we were going to have a very premature child in March of 2007 there was not room in Ottawa to accommodate us. I was sent through to the Kingston General. Being in a different city when you need to be around your family is very hard. Avery Ava Colbert was born 3 days later at 27 weeks weighing 1lb, 12oz. The staff leading up to the birth and after were beyond wonderful to me and my entire family. They were so very accommodating of our situation and really made us feel at home. The staff in the NICU unit helped us through a very difficult and uncertain time and kept us up to date with news and information on how we were all going to get home. They truly were the doctors that saved my life as well as my child’s! Although our stay at the Kingston General was short (11 days), we still visit often to remember were it all began. We take Avery to visit Kingston a few times a year and tell her all about the adventure she sent us on. Kingston will always be a special place in our hearts.
