Kingston General Hospital traces its history back to 1835. After the Union of the provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, Kingston became the capital. Parliament met in the hospital from 1841 to 1845. KGH has been associated with the Medical Faculty at what is now Queen’s University since 1854.
Through the facility in Kingston and 24 satellites and affiliate sites throughout southeastern Ontario, KGH serves almost 500,000 residents who live in a 20,000-square-kilometre predominantly rural area, as well as some communities on James Bay in Ontario’s north.
These people count on KGH when they have high-risk pregnancies, cancer, very sick babies, heart attacks, strokes, life-threatening injuries and respiratory failure. They come to KGH when they require specialized care that is not available in their local community: when they need heart surgery, life support, dialysis, brain surgery, stem cells, radiation and special imaging. In addition to it's regional role, KGH also serves as a community hospital, caring for the less acute needs of the residents of Greater Kingston.
Together with Queen’s University, KGH trains post-graduate students and conducts important research. Every year, 2,400 students from 34 universities and colleges across Canada rely on the learning environment at KGH on their journey to become the health-care professionals of tomorrow. The hospital is home to 160 researchers. KGH is the third largest employer in the Greater Kingston area, and the place where 850 volunteers contribute their energy and skills to caring for others.

The Kingston General Hospital Foundation
Patients and their families come first at Kingston General Hospital. The hospital’s Foundation works as a team at your bedside and behind the scenes. Gifts from donors like you help the Foundation buy equipment to better diagnose illness, provide pain relief, monitor our tiniest patients, and much more. Last year, generous donors helped the hospital to purchase equipment such as Alaris Pump Modules for the Emergency Room, Vital Signs Monitors and a Vivid 7 ECHO sytem for pediatric cardiac patients.
The knowledge and skills of hospital staff are the greatest resource in providing care to patients. As a teaching hospital, KGH trains highly skilled professionals of today and tomorrow. KGH relies on donors to help staff stay current through donations in support of scholarships and education. Last year, the KGH Foundation was able to support a life long learning program for staff and clinical skills training.
People from Kingston and around the world benefit from the research conducted at KGH. Donations in support of research will help discover ways to detect problems earlier and provide treatment more effectively. Last year, the KGH Foundation supported research into prostate and breast cancer, diabetes as well as anatomical pathology.
The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation provides regular disbursements to the KGH Foundation. Funds disbursed to the KGH Foundation represent either a specific share of all gifts in support of the hospitals generally or funds that donors have designated to support Kingston General Hospital, the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at KGH or specific purposes near and dear to them personally.
The KGH Foundation is responsible for disbursing funds to Kingston General Hospital and its Cancer Centre as requested by individual donors and to administer and invest the various program and endowment funds it holds in a prudent manner. For more information specifically about the Kingston General Hospital Foundation, including the programs it supports and endowments held, please call 613-548-2338.
The Kingston General Hospital Foundation has raised more than $40 million to support patient care, teaching and research at Kingston General Hospital since it was established in the late 1970s. Over the years, the Foundation, led by a dedicated cadre of community volunteers, raised funds through the annual Black Tie Evening, the Foundation Society membership program, annual mailings, community events and programs designed for those wishing to make major gifts, bequests or other planned gifts.
Thank you for supporting KGH.
