Darkness at Work: Recognizing and Managing Depression in the Workplace
Depression in the workplace costs $7.3 billion a year in health costs and lost revenue, it’s the fastest rising cause of disability claims, and it is a leading cause of absenteeism and presenteeism (coming to work but under functioning).  As many as one in five people will experience depression in their lifetime, yet, surprisingly, fewer than 30 per cent will be treated.

Musical Memory May Hold a Key
Since the first primitive sounds were released from a hollow reed or a seashell, music has been a source of inspiration, motivation, consolation and contemplation.  But in the past few decades, it has taken on a new dimension as some scientists are using it as a device that can explore, explain and — perhaps someday — help people living with dementia.

Dr. Lola Cuddy, a Queen’s University professor emeritus and researcher, says her recent work shows music memory is spared in many people living with dementia, and that fact could be used as a diagnostic tool.

3-D TV warning for kids, pregnant women: Parents advised to check if children feel lightheadedness, twitching, nausea
A warning from a 3-D TV manufacturer may prompt parents and pregnant women to think twice about allowing space heroes and pirates to jump off the screen into their living rooms.  Dr. Martin ten Hove, a neuro-ophthalmologist at Hotel Dieu Hospital, says 3-D movies trick the brain and cause an unnecessary strain on eye muscles.

Volcano Watch: No Increased Risk of Health Effects
The ash cloud from the volcanic explosion in Iceland contains fine particles, similar to those emitted from other sources of particulate matter (PM); but as long as ash remains in the upper atmosphere, there will not likely be an increased risk of health effects, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Celebrate Our Nurses: The Heart of Health Care!
Nursing Week takes place each year throughout Canada during the week of Florence Nightingale’s May 12th birthday. It is a time to recognize the year-round dedication and achievements of registered nurses and registered practical nurses, and to increase awareness of their contributions to the well-being of Canadians. Nursing Week 2010 is celebrated from Monday, May 10 to Sunday, May 16.

Why not steer that teen to Hotel Dieu Hospital’s Elements of Health Care program, designed to introduce secondary school students to the world of health care careers and programs.  Students will develop communication and leadership skills, participate in a meaningful volunteer experience and learn more about health care in a hands-on environment.  Application deadline is Friday June 4.

Young cancer researcher at Queen’s receives international award
A Queen’s student is the only Canadian university recipient of this year’s Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Awards. The award, presented by the American Association of Cancer Research, will pay for Jamaica Cass, a masters student in Microbiology and Immunology, to attend the AACR’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

Moving house: Mental Health Services Personality Disorders Service
Staff and clients of the MHS Personality Disorders Service will take many fond memories with them of their time spent at the heritage Beechgrove Cottage located on the grounds of Mental Health Services. Problems encountered with an aging building required relocation to a new more modern location at:  303 Bagot Street, Suite 300 (LaSalle Mews).  The service will now be co-located with colleagues from the Regional Community Brain Injury Service.
