Hotel Dieu gets green light to go to tender

Hotel Dieu Hospital is pleased to announce that it has reached a critical—and exciting—milestone in its major redevelopment project.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) has now given the hospital the go-ahead to tender the project—that is, to seek bids from pre-qualified contractors to construct and renovate those areas that will house the remaining outpatient clinics transferring from Kingston General Hospital.

With that key MOHLTC approval in place, the hospital can move quickly towards the long-anticipated construction phase of the redevelopment project, says Ted Darby, Vice-President of Planning and Facilities for Kingston’s university hospitals.

“It means that all of our planning has been successful and that we can fix our sights on turning what’s on paper into reality,” he says.

Specifically, the construction phase focuses on building new clinics on Jeanne Mance 4 and 5; renovating areas of Johnson 4 for new Urology clinics; building a Pulmonary Function Testing lab on Brock 4; and adding two new elevators in the Johnson wing.  In total, 36,000 square feet of hospital space will be overhauled.

The hospital anticipates releasing its request for tender submissions to the marketplace within the next four weeks.

“We’ll evaluate those tender submissions and make a recommendation to the Ministry, which then provides instructions to Hotel Dieu to award the tender,” explains Ted.

Once the tender is awarded, construction phasing will be determined.  Construction is slated to begin in early summer 2010; the goal is to complete the project by the end of 2011.

The Together We Can campaign is raising funds for hospital construction projects as well as other priority needs at all three university hospitals of Kingston.  To date, it has raised over $60 million of its $70 million goal.
